Cleaning and Servicing Benefits | HVAC System Mount Forest

Did you know regular maintenance of your HVAC System is beneficial to the life and operation of your equipment!

A few other tips for year round is to make sure your heating/cooling vents and return air grilles are clear of furniture so that the air can flow smoothly around. Its a good idea to remove the grilles and vacuum them front and back to remove dirt, dust and dander. Also while the grilles are off vacuum down into the heating duct or return air to remove any cob webs (you may be surprised!) and dirt caught in them.

Infloor Heating Installation | Mount Forest Heating Contractors

The work of an HVAC Technician truly can be described as an art of their very own. There is a lot of attention to detail, specific skills and knowledge required with a complex understanding of how the finished system is going to work!

Our guys installed infloor piping the other day, its not as simple as just laying pipe, there is a design involved for the overall heating of the floor and building.

Great work guys it looks awesome!

Perfect Weather To Clear Snow | The Calm After The Storm

What a gorgeous winter morning to wake up to, at least in our part of Ontario! The temperature a cool yet refreshing -7 with light snow flakes falling.

Please take advantage of this “warmer” winter weather to get outside and ensure the snow is properly cleared around all your vents for your home. This includes dryer vents as well as your heating appliances (furnace, boiler, fireplace) and hot water heater.

The picture below is a photo of the intake and exhaust vents for a forced air furnace. The exhaust is straight out, intake points down. If your vents are blocked they can cause the equipment to not function properly or not work altogether.

Please also check your filters. A blocked filter will cause your furnace and HRV to work much harder than it is designed to do and possibly over heat. This can cause premature break down of the appliance and reduced life. It is recommended to have your system maintained and cleaned at least once every 2 years while changing your filters every 2-4 months, more often in the heating season.

Don’t forget your plumbing system! Is your basement currently heated? If you have forced air heating in your home having a duct run off the furnace and into your basement – even if its unfinished, will help your mechanical room stay warm and prevent pipes from freezing. Ensure all outside taps are shut off from the inside and the taps are open outside.

Remember to be safe while out driving on the roads! Ensure your windshield is cleared properly, you have a snow brush in your car, your gas tank is full or at least over half full and you are dressed for the weather! Also very helpful if you have a blanket – just in case and a cell phone (fully charged or with a charger in your vehicle).

Enjoy… a photo from yesterday morning!

Ensure You and Your Home Stay Warm In The Cold!

The good people at Lennox have offered some excellent tips to “Stay Bold Against The Cold” in their recent Comfort Matters post! Check out their great tips for you and your home to stay warm in this cold winter weather.

As always please remember to ensure your furnace filter is clean or changed regularly.

When the temperatures drop OR we get a lot of snow, checking your heating vents is very important. When it is very cold outside (like today), when your furnace vents the vapour can crystallize over the vents when it hits the cold winter air. Be sure to check the vents at least once a day to ensure they are clear, twice if you are experiencing issues with your system. The same when we get a lot of snow, ensure your vents are clear.

Why is it important to keep the vents clear? The heating system has to breathe, if it cannot bring in fresh air and exhaust the stale air your system will not be able to work properly and will shut down.

What do the vents look like? If they are out the side of your house they will look similar to this…

Furnace Vents Cleared 20140107_124106_resizedThe pipe pointing down is the intake, the pipe straight out is the exhaust. They do require a minimum of 12″ all around them to work properly with the heating system.

When in doubt, once you’ve made sure your filter is clean, your vents are clear and have tried to reset your system… give us a call at 1-866-565-5513.

Thinking of Decorating?

When you are thinking of re-decorating your home please keep in mind the location of your thermostat and all of your heat and cool registers.

Why is this important?

The other night I was watching a decorating show on a popular channel (that happens to be one of my favourite channels), the decorator wanted to hide the “nasty” thermostat… what she was hiding it with was a 1-2″ deep frame (depth was under neath) and this would infact then completely cover (and prevent ANY air flow from getting to) the thermostat. The frame was much like a shadow box, but with the depth to the back to cover the thermostat.

Why does this matter?

The way a thermostat works is it has a sensor in it, this sensor senses when the temperature in the room drops below the tempterature set on your thermostat, thus calling for heat. When the thermostat is completely covered like this there will be NO air flow, the customer will then keep raising the temperature to get more heat into their home OR will call a service tech to find out why their home is not reaching the temperature the stat is set to… a waste of money in this case.

Some of the benefits of our most commonly used thermostat, the Lennox Comfortsense 7000 are:

  • Large, clear display with soft blue backlight shows the current and set temperature, day/date/time, indoor relative humidity and outdoor  temperature (if optional outdoor sensor is used).

  • Dehumidification measurement and control
  • Humiditrol EDA Capability
  • Dew point adjustment control
  • Smooth Setback Recovery starts system early to achieve setpoint at start of program period.
  • Compressor short−cycle protection (5 minutes).
  • Real−time clock keeps time during power failures and automatically adjusts for daylight savings time and leap year.

  • Maintenance reminders let user know when to service or replace filters, humidifier pads, ultraviolet lamps, plus two user or installer defined custom reminders.

  • Programmable fan offers increased performance when combined with whole home indoor air quality products.

  • Outdoor temperature display (with optional outdoor sensor) shows current outdoor temperature.

As you can see from some of these features of this particular thermostat it is essential for there to be air flow for proper operation, not only proper operation of the thermost but of the heating and cooling equipment that the thermostat is controlling.

Heat & Cool Registers…

Why is it important to ensure there is adequate air flow around these registers?

No matter what the age of your heating and cooling system, without proper air flow and circulation to and from the system, this can not only cause issues within your home but also in the system.

The duct work in your home is designed for air flow to each room with hot and cold registers for proper air flow. The heat comes out of the hot air return register and then the cold air return register takes the air back through the system again.

Your heating and cooling system is chosen and the duct work designed on your whole home size (square footage), which includes the air flow to and from each of the rooms. So if you have a piece of furniture in front of your cold air return your furnace cannot get adequate air to run the cycle, which could over time cause the system to over heat or break down prematurely. Having the registers blocked can also cause the A/C to lockout on high pressure.

This also can cause dust and dirt build up within the rooms of your home behind the furnace and if ever suddenly sucked through your vents and duct work can cause unneccesary build up in your ducts and within the furnace filter. By not having proper air flow within your home this can contribute to mold and mildew problems as well, which will then affect breathing.

By ensuring your registers are clear from furniture you can prolong the life of your heating and cooling system, as it will be operating properly and efficiently, and also improve the air quality in your home, as dust particles will be caught in the furnace filter rather than built up around your home. Especially if you are thinking of or just did upgrade to an Energy Efficient HVAC System – you want to ensure proper air circulation to reep the savings rewards!

Spring Cleaning & Servicing

With this gorgeous spring weather many of us have had our heating systems turned off… until yesterday that is! We held off as long as we could, however at bedtime last night we had to turn the furnace back on. Our fireplace has also been running the odd time in the basement for the past couple weeks.

Now is a great time to ensure that your heating system is in tip top shape for heating season next year. Of course with cleaning and servicing there is no guarantee nothing will happen, however by having your equipment properly maintained and cleaned will not only save you in energy costs but also be cleaner in your home.

Indoor Spring Cleaning Tips

  • Wipe down all your walls, lights and fans
  • Dust shelves, door ways, trim, windows, art work/photos and around computers
  • Dust or clean window coverings and window sills
  • Clean windows & wash your window and door screens
  • Clean behind your fridge & vacuum off the back
  • Clean out and organize cupboards and fridge/freezer
  • Change batteries in your smoke and CO detectors
  • Check for any leaking taps or pipes
  • Vacuum and clean bathroom fans
  • Check grout on tiles, bathtub & shower – regrout if cracking
  • Change or wash filters in your Furnace, Air Conditioner and HRV
  • Schedule cleaning & servicing on your heating and cooling appliances
  • Ensure furniture is moved away from registers – cold and hot air to ensure proper circulation
  • Remove the cover from your Air Conditioner
  • Clean area rugs (shampoo if necessary) and give furniture a good cleaning
  • Declutter! Go through paper, recycle or file. Closets – coat closets, clothes closets. Donate things that no longer fit. Scan any paper work and then shred. Go through kids toys, garbage broken ones and donate any they no longer play with.
  • Ensure your dryer vent is cleaned out and give your washer a good cleaning
  • Visually inspect your Hot Water Heater, Furnace, Air Conditioner, Water Softener and any other plumbing or heating appliance to familiarize yourself with their sounds and ensure there are no visible leaks. *we do not recommend homeowners taking these appliances apart in anyway please leave the cleaning & servicing to a professional – home owners should perform visual inspections to ensure there is no water leaking or making unusual sounds.
